Day 235 – A Bumblebee at Avebury

The thistles at Avebury were growing right along the path, just under the wooden rail that runs beside the road. Most people were looking out over the field. I ended up crouching low instead, until the rail became a dark diagonal across the top of the frame and everything below it opened up into soft grass and sky.

One flower had opened further than the rest, and a bumblebee was working its way across it. I waited for it to settle before pressing the shutter. Nearby a butterfly had landed on another thistle, closer to me but well outside the plane of focus, so it stayed as a warm blur in the lower part of the frame.

What I liked about the scene was how little of it was sharp. The bee and its flower carry the picture. The rest is just colour and shape, the field suggested rather than described. The stones brought us there, but it was the thistle that stopped me.
